There are lot’s of different types of skin needling devices on the market these days. Since their introduction to Europe and North America a few years ago, they have become hugely popular. It is unsurprising considering how simple and how effective skin needling (also refereed to as micro needling or derma rolling) actually is.

For those who have never come across this process before, there is a wealth of information available from several sources on the web. As a brief overview though, skin needling is a process of collagen induction therapy. Whilst this sounds complicated, it boils down to encouraging the natural reproduction of collagen in the skin.

The same way all people are capable of healing themselves after cutting or grazing their skin, skin needling takes this same principle and causes natural healing in areas which have been affected by everyday skin issues.

What Skin Needling Does

This means that skin needling is probably the best way to get rid of stretch marks permanently. Improvements to these types of complaint are remarkable and within a very short space of time too. Other key treatments include the greatly reducing the look and appearance of scars, including acne scars.

As a final general area of suitability, skin needling is the simplest, most cost effective way of reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes and face. So where does the MNS roller fit into all of this?

The MNS Skin Roller

As previously stated, there are now plenty of skin needling devices on the market. The MNS Roller (Micro Needling System) is just one of these products. Manufactured to a high standard, the system is becoming one of the favoured brands on the market for several reasons.

Firstly one of the features which most users are looking for is their rollers to come pre-sterilized. The MNS is sealed in sterile manner before being packaged which gives users the chance to get straight into their treatments. It also means that the MNS roller is ideal for professionals and commercial salons which may not wish to go through the process of sterilisation of the roller themselves.

Other MNS Benefits

As second general feature of the MNS roller is its high build quality. A solid construction is backed up with an excellent standard of needle and secure packaging ideal for transportation or storage of the device. Many cheaper rollers do not come anywhere near the MNS in terms of it’s overall good quality and durability.

Finally, despite being of superior quality, the price of the MNS is generally much below that of other premium skin needling devices. It is possible to pick up this particular brand very cheaply, particularly from one of the skin needling supermarkets which are showing up on the web. These supermarkets are also a great place to compare the differences between skin rollers too.

Could you tell me how long your dermaroller lasts before it needs changing?

It depends on several factors which should be taken into account when choosing which Dermaroller to buy. (We are on hand to help at any time)

Firstly, which model Dermaroller are you buying. Generally, the more expensive the derma roller the longer it will last. Higher quality models will have needles will be made from improved materials. Whilst most dermarollers are made from medical grade stainless steel, there are other types available including titanium alloys.

Secondly, how often are you using it. It is common sense to appreciate that the more you use it, the sooner it will need to be replaced.

Finally, how are you using and maintaining it. If you only apply the dermaroller lightly, don’t drop it and clean it regularly, you are going to extend the life of your dermaroller considerably.

However, the general rule of thumb is that your dermaroller should be lasting around three months. This gives more than enough time for the results of any dermaroller treatment to begin showing through.

The rule of thumb is about three months - more than enough time for results to show. This of course is largely affected by the model of dermaroller you choose, how often you use it and how well you look after your dermaroller.

Question: I see that not all the Dermarollers you sell are FDA approved. Can you tell me which Dermarollers are FDA approved?

We have gone to great lengths to confirm the FDA status of all Dermarollers. After consulting the FDA and finding no record of any dermaroller establishing FDA approval we have established that the following is correct.

In the USA, “roller”-type devices, when not making therapeutic claims, are classified as Class I medical devices (Manual Surgical Instruments for General Use) under 21 CFR 878.4800. This is the classification being used by the manufacturers and the basis upon which they are available in the USA. If therapeutic claims are made, either clearance of a 510(k) premarket notification or approval of a premarket approval application (PMA) is required.

As is the case with all medical devices, manufacturers of Class I devices under 21 CFR 878.4800 are required to register their establishment and list their devices. A registration number and owner/operator number is obtained, but this is purely an administrative process

Our job at Dermaroller Planet is to give you unbiased, open and honest information on all of our products. Baring this in mind, and failing any further contact directly from the FDA, Dermaroller Planet has taken the correct position that no Dermaroller has FDA approval.

This of course does not alter the fact that micro-needling is a wholly safe process. As responsible retailers, it is imperative we give you the full facts and we are confident that as responsible retailers, we should not mislead any of our customers in any way. Our responsibilities lie with the customer, not the manufacturer!

Should you come across any dermaroller products being sold with FDA approval from any site, please be aware that not all companies take the same moral standpoint and will continue to brand identical products to ours with full FDA approval.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. You can leave comments below which will be answered by a member of our team or contact us directly at lookinggood@dermaroller-planet.com

Answer: No Dermarollers on the market, have FDA approval and claims of such should be viewed with the utmost caution. Whilst they are registered with the FDA, this is an administrative process and does not mean approval has been obtained.

Question: I am going on holiday in a few months and I am wondering when I should stop using my dermaroller to avoid the heightened risk of sun exposure damage.

This is an important question as we become more and more aware of the dangers of not protecting ourselves against the harmful UV rays of the sun. Please always use your dermaroller safely and with care. Thank you, Patrik from Sweden, for asking this question

Dermaroller Use

There are two answers to this question, depending on how you choose to use your dermaroller. Those who dermaroll lightly on a daily basis, shouldn’t need to worry too much about additional sun exposure damage under normal weather conditions. That is not to say that no protection is required - always use sunscreen, even in northern European climates.

If you are going on holiday where the sun is expected to be much stronger than you are used to, refrain from using your dermaroller for at least 24 hours before leaving. This should give you skin enough time to recuperate to it’s normal level resistance. It may also be prudent to increase you SPF factor a little - we always would recommend approaching things from the side of caution and this 24 hour period should be seen as an absolute minimum.

If you opt to use your dermaroller based on the professional approach of numbing agents and a more vigorous use of the dermaroller or you choose our trained beauticians services, your skin will be much more susceptible to skin damage. In this instance always use sunscreen regardless of the weather outside. If you are going to, or live in, a particularly hot climate, we do not recommend dermaroller treatments for at least 48 hours before any sun exposure.

Again, these are absolute minimums. Please take care whenever you expose your skin to the sun. Not only can you burn, but you also run the risk of promoting the development of serious skin problems (including cancer) by not taking sun exposure seriously. Furthermore, the sun ages the skin and will counteract all the good work of using the dermaroller in the first place!

Remember too that even in cloudy conditions you can burn. In fact, it is in these types of scenarios where the air temperature feels cooler by comparison that serious sunburn can occur.

Answer: At least 24-48 hours but we recommend at least a week abstinence before going on holiday. This way, not only will your skin be fully prepared for sunny conditions, but your skin should then also be looking as good as possible as it continues to form collagen, heal and repair continually even after you stop dermarolling.

Ok. This is the plain English guide for the majority of those who have never heard of a Dermaroller before. Written by somebody who hadn’t heard of them a year ago - but now sells them. Hello, I’m Alex Mason. I run the site and am responsible for most aspects of the business. You can look me up on facebook - I’m right there; I’m real.

When I first heard about Dermarollers I genuinely thought that they sounded a right load of bollox* - probably how most people react. I won’t bore you with the story of how I “discovered” dermarollers. They sounded strange then, and to be honest, they still do.

*For those non Brits: Bollox - The word is often used figuratively in British English, as a noun to mean “nonsense”

Do Dermarollers Work?

You can look it up on the internet, (you’re already there) but customers say they work, doctors say they work, they kind of make sense when you read about them (see our less than plain English How Dermarollers Work page.) and now I’ve used one, I know they work.

So that’s why we sell them. I’m not a doctor, or a beauty expert. I do however have a registered nurse on hand who will answer any of your queries. She has been working full time at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary for the past 6 years. She has now re-trained as a beauty therapist. And she offers a Dermaroller Service as part of her beauty therapy practice. Ro Freestone is on our about us page and she too can be looked up on facebook - She too is real.

Ro makes sure that if you are struggling to get results, or the treatment is hurting, or one of the other 101 questions people have, she helps by suggesting alternative ways for you to use the device. She delivers treatments herself and is friendly and knowledgeable.

We also encourage you to share your methods and experiences with us and other users. Although we do give you step by step instructions on how to use them, it seems everyone has their own method and our collective experiences are a valuable resource.

What Do Dermaroller Planet Do?

We offer all the information we can find on the subject of skin needling and dermarollers. We will answer any question you ask. We are on hand 24/7 - my mobile is listed in the contact us page and I have a direct skype link on whilst I’m on any network. (Which is more than 9-5 Mon-Sat GMT, much to my girlfriends annoyance!)

We also have experienced users on hand who have been selling Dermarollers for many years. They provide us with valuable experience and know how of how to use a dermaroller, methods and best practice.

If there is anything more we can do to help you understand things, how they work, how we can help or what we can do, please just let us know. It is our shop - and as in the “real” world, we are happy to chat to and help our customers. Successful businesses have happy customers.

Now it doesn’t matter that I’d never heard of dermarollers; because lot’s of other people have and we can all share in their success. They work, and they’re simple. A bit like me!

Happy Rolling!

Alex Mason.
